Performance Analysis
Although on first impressions, it appeared to be the case that the Hull cartridge produced unusually good performance – perhaps as a consequence of the lighter-than-average loading for a 2½” case – this turned out not to be the case when the patterns were counted.
In fact, depressingly, the member of the SmallBoreShotguns team who tested the cartridge found that, much as his previous experience with this cartridge in another gun demonstrated, there simply are not enough pellets in the pattern to guarantee a hit on any ordinary target, clay, bird or ground game. Having seen the patterns however, he was reassured that many of the “lost birds” on those fateful days at the clay ground some years ago were probably not all down to his bad shooting!
The Hull cartridge does not contain enough pellets to meet the SmallBoreShotguns teams’ “lowest-acceptable” limit of 120 pellets in the standard circle and can therefore not be recommended as a cartridge for use on game or clays. Although slightly more consistent than some other 2½” rolled-turnover cartridges tested by the SBS team, it nonetheless appears to have a high variability of performance. Further testing will show this to be the case or not.
Patterns produced by this cartridge were even enough, but sparse. We do not recommend its use at ranges of more than 20 yards and even within this distance, other cartridges are likely to provide a better balance of penetration and pattern.
